Is Your Website Accessible to Everyone?

by | Jan 1, 2018 | Zoda Design Blog

Website design and development has evolved a great deal in recent decades. No matter what language is spoken or where a person is located, websites are easily accessed regardless of the technology they’re using. Even so, full accessibility means more than that – it’s when a person who can’t move a mouse or actually see the content is still able to access the information on your website.  Currently there are many websites and applications that are not fully accessible, which makes it difficult or impossible for people with disabilities to use the web efficiently.

Accessible design of a website assumes that we don’t know who will be looking at our websites. For example, if there are audio files on your website, you could include a transcript for those that are hearing impaired. Also, full keyboard support is quite helpful for those who are unable to move a mouse.

If you are in the early stages of development, implementing website accessibility is easy – just follow the guidelines set forth by W3C’s Web Accessibility Initiative. If you have an existing website that you’d like to make accessible, an Accessibility Evaluation is a good place to start. This will give you an idea of what improvements you can make so that your site is more accessible to those with disabilities. Even so, the evaluation may have such an overwhelming amount of changes needed that you may decide on a complete website overhaul.

The most effective way to know how to improve your website for accessibility is to do usability tests with a wide range of users with different disabilities.

The Web Accessibility Initiative is gaining ground and joining forces with other people in the industry.  They are paving the way for website designers, developers, writers and other web savvy people to make the web fully accessible.
